Got kids? Need space? Bunk beds are the ultimate solution, creating room for play and a world of imagination. But let’s be honest, the number one concern for any parent is safety. The good part? Turning that cool bunk bed into a safe, super-fun spot for your children is simple. Here’s how to ensure the adventures are always safe ones.
Check the rules
Before anyone climbs up, check the bunk bed’s rules. Most bunk beds have a label stating the right age for the top bunk. A common rule is that no child under six years old should sleep up high. Ensure the mattress fits snugly against the frame. A mattress that is too small can create a dangerous gap where a child could get stuck.
Build a strong guardrail
The top bunk must have guardrails on all four sides. Even if the bed is pushed against a wall, the rail on that side is still important. Check that the space between the guardrail and the bed frame is very small. A good test is to see if a soda can fits through. If it can, the gap is too wide. Your child could slip through.
Use a safe ladder
Always use the ladder that came with the bunk bed. Ensure it is firmly attached and teach your children to always climb up and down facing the rungs. Do not let them use furniture or toys as a ladder to reach the top bunk. The ladder should be the only way up. Keep the area around the ladder clear of clutter.
Make a soft landing
Even with all the rules, a fall can happen. Prepare for this by placing a soft rug or exercise mats on the floor around the bed. This will provide a much safer landing than a hard floor. Ensure the landing area is free of hard toys or furniture with sharp corners.
Keep it clear and bright
The top bunk is for sleeping and quiet play only. Do not allow rough play like wrestling or jumping. Hanging items like belts or ropes from the bunk bed is not safe. Also, ensure the ceiling fan is off and is not a danger to the child on the top bunk. A small clip-on light can provide good reading light without the danger of a loose lamp.
